The aim of this study was to examine how social workers relate to and attribute meaning to the documentation in social work and what functions the documents have for them. The study was conducted by qualitative interviews with five social workers. The interviews were analyzed with a social constructionist approach. The findings imply that the social workers experienced insecurity regarding how to determine what is relevant, that there is a feeling of security in standardized documentation and writing as their colleagues. Furthermore, the findings suggest that there are different ways to use the documentation, for the colleagues, for themselves and for the clients. Therefore, the documentation has different functions, such as providing security, proof and as a way to legitimize the social work. Finally, the findings suggest that there are some activities that occurs in connection with the documentation, such as work with the documentation system, and that the social workers sometimes have to angle the documentation and thereafter warn the clients about it.
