Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
Inequality in health between different ethnic and socioeconomic groups in Sweden has been well established. The present study sought to investigate the effect of patient ethnicity and socioeconomic status (SES) on psychiatric assessments. The study was carried out using a vignette-based experiment in which 188 medical and clinical psychology students were randomized into one of four conditions and were asked to assess two different cases with different symptomatology (representing depression and psychosis respectively). The name of the patient (Arabic/Swedish) and markers for socioeconomic status (Lower class/Upper middle class) were manipulated according to condition. The results showed a significant main effect of patient ethnicity in... (More)

The name of the patient (Arabic/Swedish) and markers for socioeconomic status (Lower class/Upper middle class) were manipulated according to condition. The results showed a significant main effect of patient ethnicity in the case of the depressed patient. The patient was perceived as being less symptomatic if they had an Arabic name than if they had a Swedish name. This result dovetails with previous international research. Moreover, a significant interaction effect on preference for treatment was found. No significant effects of SES were found. No significant effects were found for the psychotic patient. Implications and directions for future research are discussed. (Less)
