- When coming across a potentially dangerous situation it is adaptable to be able to assess the danger in an accurate way by recognizing cues for danger or discriminating the situation from previous memories. It has been shown that memories that are consolidated under threat are more likely to lack specificity and may be generalized onto future experiences. It has been shown that memories that are consolidated under threat are more likely to lack specificity and may be generalized onto future experiences. Our study aimed to investigate how episodic memories are influenced by threat using different sounds during encoding. Using the Mnemonic Similarity Task (MST) in two different conditions, subjects were shown pictures of everyday objects while listening to sounds of varying valence. After encoding, subjects underwent a memory test showing old, new and similar images aiming to identify the images correctly. By altering the sounds in each of the two conditions we aimed to investigate how threat influenced discrimination, recognition and generalization of the memory as well as examining whether the effect was specific to the threat itself or the threatening situation. Additionally, we intended to evaluate the method of implementing an online version of the MST. We found no significant results supporting that memory was influenced by either sound or situation. We did however find a significant order effect which this study is not able to fully comprehend. Our analysis of the method suggests that MST is suitable for online-use and that the results are comparable to previous research. (Less)

- När man befinner sig i en potentiellt farlig situation är det adaptivt att kunna bedöma faran på ett korrekt sätt genom att känna igen tidiga signaler för fara och diskriminera situationen från tidigare minnen. Det har visats att minnen som konsolideras under hot är mer benägna att sakna specificitet och att generaliseras i framtida situationer. Vår studie ämnade undersöka hur episodiska minnen påverkas av hot genom att använda olika ljud vid inkodningen. Genom Mnemonic Similarity Task (MST) med två olika betingelser, visades deltagarna bilder av vardagliga föremål medan de lyssnade på ljud av varierande valens. Efter inkodningen gjorde deltagarna ett minnestest där gamla, nya och liknande bilder visades och testets syfte var att identifiera bilderna korrekt. Vi fann dock en signifikant ordningseffekt som denna studie har en otillräcklig design för att förstå. Analysen av metoden indikerar att MST är lämpligt för onlineanvändning och att våra resultat är jämförbara med tidigare forskning. (Less)
