Abstract
The aim of this study is to analyze and evaluate some of the Swedish recommendations, strategies and tools used for personal safety in underground hard rock mines. The study was conducted using four different research methods divided into three parts based on each other. The first part consisted of a literature study reviewing previous research, laws and recommendations. The second part consisted of a discussion with experienced people working with mine fire safety or mine rescue service. The aim of this study is to analyze and evaluate some of the Swedish recommendations, strategies and tools used for personal safety in underground hard rock mines. The study was conducted using four different research methods divided into three parts based on each other. The second part consisted of a discussion with experienced people working with mine fire safety or mine rescue service. In the third part results from both part one and two was analysed using evacuation calculations and an evacuation exercise. Part one, the literature survey, showed that regulations and recommendations are generic and that the best security is achieved through risk assessment for each part of the mine. During part two, group discussions, a lack of technical aids adapted to the mining environment was highlighted. In part three the calculations showed that escape hoods are effective tools for self-rescue. The evacuation exercise on the other hand showed that not all people tend to bring the escape hood when evacuating. The study resulted in proposed actions to increase personal safety in hard rock mines. The proposals for action should be further examined to determine their effectiveness. (Less)
