Abstract
Difficulties with emotional clarity may be more prominent in children and adolescents with psychiatric symptoms, but there is limited research in clinical samples of youth with anxiety disorders (ADs) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Furthermore, emotional clarity has mostly been studied using self-report measures, indicating the need for more experiential ways of examining this concept. The aim of this study was to test whether youth with ADs and OCD had more difficulties with emotional clarity than non-clinical youth. Children and adolescents with ADs/OCD (n = 103) and without psychiatric disorders (n = 29) completed a computer-based task, designed to measure emotional clarity and emotional reactivity. The reliability of the task... (More)

The reliability of the task was examined, after which multiple linear regression analyses were performed. Correlations were computed in order to analyse the association between emotional clarity and emotional reactivity. The results showed that children and adolescents with psychiatric disorders had poorer emotional clarity than the comparison group. This difference was however not statistically significant when accounting for emotional reactivity. Difficulties with emotional clarity and more emotional reactivity were found to be significantly and moderately correlated. In conclusion, youth with ADs and OCD have poorer emotional clarity than their non-clinical peers. However, to what extent emotional clarity is uniquely related to psychopathology remains unclear. Correlations between emotional clarity and emotional reactivity indicate the need for further exploration regarding their role in clinical youth. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
