Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to gain an in-depth understanding of how aware psychotherapists are about shame in therapy and gain more knowledge about how they deal with their own and the patient's shame in the interpersonal interaction. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with psychodynamically oriented psychotherapists active in southern Sweden. The material was analyzed with thematic analysis and seven themes were selected. The study essentially found that shame can be a complicated feeling and difficult to understand. The patient can present different defense strategies to escape the shame. The results showed the importance of having words for shame and an understanding of how shame can be expressed or hidden. Shame can vary in... (More)
The purpose of this study was to gain an in-depth understanding of how aware psychotherapists are about shame in therapy and gain more knowledge about how they deal with their own and the patient's shame in the interpersonal interaction. Shame can vary in intensity. In case of shame, both the body and the cognitive ability are affected. The psychotherapists in the study described that in shame, their professional identity and self-esteem could feel deficient and doubts about their competence could arise in therapy. Furthermore, the study showed that empathy is important in shame, both towards oneself and the other in order to achieve increased shame tolerance. The study showed that in the event of shame, the contact and reciprocity between the psychotherapist and the patient risks being broken. The study also highlights the importance of re-establishing contact between them. (Less)
