Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine how healthcare workers, who have taken part of an internal reflection group, and counselors, who lead the group, describe their experience and what this means for the salutogenic factors comprehensibility, manageability and meaningfulness. The study was conducted through interviews with six assistant nurses and two counselors from one ward at Skånes universitetssjukhus. The analysis was based on a salutogenic perspective and sense of coherence theory. The main findings of the study are that the assistant nurses and the counselors do not share expectations regarding the role of the counselors; the assistans nurses expected the counselors to act as experts, delivering solutions, while the counselors’ expectations relate to guiding the conversation and helping the assistant nurses to reflect on their experience. A conclusion of the analysis is that during participation in the reflection group, the assistant nurses feel secure to share their experience. Meanwhile, the assistant nurses do not know whether or not they have the chance to participate in the reflection group until the day of the meeting. The analysis shows that the nurses perceive this as unstructured and unpredictable. Additionally, the analysis shows that taking part in the reflection group gives a sense of confirmation and helps in dealing with difficult situations. Taking part in a reflection group also has a positive effect on relational quality between colleagues, managing stress, and making the work feel more meaningful. (Less)
