Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
Introduction: The aim of this study was to examine young men’s experience of seeking out and participate in therapy. Method: The qualitative study used a phenomenological approach. Eight semi-structured interviews were conducted, seven of which were chosen for the study. The participants were young men in the age of 18 to 27 years old, who had undergone talk therapy with a counselor. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed using thematic analyses. Result: Four main themes were identified. The themes regarded the resistance to come to insight about the need for therapy as well as how valuable a safe relationship with the therapist was for the result of the therapy. Furthermore, the themes pointed to how the support or passivity of the... (More)

Furthermore, the themes pointed to how the support or passivity of the informants’ network enabled or hindered the process of seeking help. The last theme highlights the change in the informants’ self-image and experience of being a man. Discussion: The result of this study is in accordance with other studies regarding seeking help and masculinity norms. Fonagy’s thery of mentalization is used to explain the importance of a safe relationship with the counselor in order to be able to internalize aspects of the self preciously unattainable or hidden. The informants’ experiences of abandonment by their two most important attachments systems; the parents and the male friend group, are discussed. Conclusion: The therapy has provided these young men with more inclusive and flexible experiences of masculinity norms, which has affected their psychological well-being. Suggestions for further research within the field are discussed. (Less)
