Abstract
This thesis is based on two case studies of public art, Tony Cragg's artwork Points of View and Marianne Lindberg De Geer's artwork Jag tänker på mig själv. The purpose of the thesis is to clarify municipal processes related to public art and to investigate how perceptions of public art can differ between art institutions, art critics and the general public. The results from the case studies are analysed with the help of Bourdieu's field theory, art sociology and institutional theory. The survey shows that the municipal art galleries were partly involved in the process of buying and placing the works, but lack funds and power to make decisions. This thesis is based on two case studies of public art, Tony Cragg's artwork Points of View and Marianne Lindberg De Geer's artwork Jag tänker på mig själv. The purpose of the thesis is to clarify municipal processes related to public art and to investigate how perceptions of public art can differ between art institutions, art critics and the general public. The results from the case studies are analysed with the help of Bourdieu's field theory, art sociology and institutional theory. The survey shows that Cragg's work in Malmö was met with criticism from art critics and Malmö Konsthall, which the work is located outside, while the public appreciates the artwork. In Växjö, Lindberg De Geer's work has been vandalized but has later been accepted by the public and was previously appreciated by art critics and the municipal art gallery. The thesis shows that the different stakeholders have acted differently in the conflict depending on what position they have in the field of cultural production. The perspectives that are expressed in the conflicts can also be seen as part of the stakeholders' position in the field of cultural production and what habitus and cultural capital they hold. The cases are also investigated through the perspective of art sociology, which shows how inclusion and education can increase interest in public art. (Less)
