- Illegal waste trafficking is today one of the most profitable illegal activities in the world. About 25 % of all global waste transports are estimated to be illegal and they are increasing. The same applies to plastics; the production of plastics is increasing and so is the illegal shipment of plastic waste. Due to the often- harmful substances in plastics, when plastic waste is not taken care of in a proper way, these harmful substances are released into the environment and causes damage.

This study shows what the Swedish authorities do to manage and reduce the illegal waste trafficking. To achieve the aim and purpose of this study we have studied scientific articles and reports from authorities that show the current situation and regulation. The study also included an examination of the legislation in the field of waste and waste shipment, both national and international. An interview has also been conducted with an environmental inspector from Malmö environmental administration. The main results show that Sweden is putting considerable effort into the prevention of illegal transportations with waste, such as plastics, across borders. The various aspects of the problem are taken care of by several Swedish authorities, who also collaborate with each other and with authorities in other countries. Despite this, there are several challenges and difficulties within the supervision that needs to improve. I Sverige är det flera myndigheter som samarbetar på området och samarbetar med andra länder. Svenska myndigheter jobbar återkommande med att förbättra tillsynen när det kommer till att identifiera och stoppa de illegala avfallstransporterna. De illegala gränsöverskridande avfallstransporterna med plast har en stor negativ inverkan på miljön på flera sätt p g a den ofta bristfälliga hanteringen av plastavfallet. Plastavfallet innehåller gifter som kan frigöras till naturen vid den bristfälliga hanteringen. Det är inte ovanligt att plastavfall hamnar i havet där det gör skada på det marina djurlivet bland annat, och stannar plastavfallet på land kan det förgifta jorden eller grundvattnet. Förbränns plastavfallet kan det också släppa ut skadliga ämnen till luften.
Till följd av den illegala gränsöverskridande handeln med plastavfall riskeras även människors hälsa då det ofta är många människor som bor på de stora deponier där illegalt avfall som plast ofta hamnar och jobbar där med att leta och sälja plastavfall. Dessa människor riskerar sin hälsa eftersom plasten innehåller hälsoskadliga ämnen vilka frigörs dels då avfallet ligger helt oskyddat på marken och dels genom att det ofta förbränns utan någon rening helt öppet.
Arbetet har koncentrerats till det miljövetenskapliga och den negativa effekten på miljön. Resultatet av det här arbetet sammanställer problemet med den illegala gränsöverskridande avfallshandeln med plast och vidden av det, för att läsaren ska bli upplyst om den här illegala globala verksamheten. Att informera om den illegala gränsöverskridande handeln med plastavfall är viktigt då den har negativa effekter på bl a miljön sett till flera aspekter och då det är en så pass omfattande illegal verksamhet. Arbetet har sammanställts från flera litterära referenser som vetenskapliga artiklar och myndighetsrapporter men också med hjälp av lagstiftningen på området miljö, avfall och avfallstransporter. En intervju har också gjorts med en miljöinspektör från Malmös Miljöförvaltning. (Less)
