The interviews were transcribed, analyzed and themed according to pre-identified themes and new themes that emerged while reading the transcriptions. The main findings in relation to three posited research questions were: 1) that the competence and knowledge needed in health counselling in general concerned competence in conversation methodology, knowledge about the legislation, a holistic and/or psychosocial perspective and some specific medical knowledge. 2) The main reason for the students to attend the program wasn’t a need for knowledge but rather so a symbolic value. The program was seen as a way into the profession of counseling and to be able to feel secure and confident in that role, as well as contributing to raising the status of the social worker in the medical context. 3) Regarding what knowledge was strengthened by the program a lot of different types of knowledge and competencies were mentioned by the students, and the internship during the program was the main source of knowledge mentioned by the interviewees.
