- Abstract
- Men's violence against women, whom they are in a relationship with, is a major social issue in today's society. Previous research has pointed out the extent of domestic violence in intimate relationships. This study aimed to investigate social workers experiences in working with the therapy of male perpetrators. Furthermore, the study aimed to look into how the therapy varies depending on if it is court-ordered or non-compulsory, how social workers can work with the perpetrators' feelings of shame and guilt and how they can motivate the clients. The method chosen for the study was qualitative and the data collection was based on six semi-structured interviews with professionals who work with therapy of perpetrators. Due to the pandemic,... Due to the pandemic, the interviews had to be held digitally. In the analysis, we included a gender perspective and an emotion-management perspective to understand how feelings of shame and guilt have an impact on the therapy and how the therapist can motivate clients to change. This study found that feelings of shame and guilt are essential in working with male perpetrators, and the therapist must know how to meet these emotions. If these emotions are not treated, they can form an obstacle in the client's process of change. It has also been brought to our attention that shame can express itself in different ways, and the perpetrators tend to use narratives when talking about their acts of violence to reduce their feelings of shame. The analysis also showed that the client's shame can have an impact on their motivation. The interviewees pointed out that court-ordered perpetrators tend to have higher levels of shame and guilt due to the sentence and the judgement from the environment. We found no differences between how the shame expresses itself in court-ordered and non-compulsory treatments. Social workers’ view on motivation has differed between these types of treatments. The social workers in the court-ordered programmes found it helpful that the clients had a sentence that worked as an external motivator. In contrast, social workers in the non-compulsory programmes found it beneficial that the clients came voluntarily. This study has attempted to highlight the importance of further research on men’s violence against women. (Less)
