The main results show that it is most common that health care social workers support children as next of kin by supporting the adult patient. There are both organizational and relational challenges and possibilities related to the work with children as next of kin and to implement that in the daily work of the health care social workers.
However, in the interviews of the health care social workers working with their patients it was revealed that they may support the child indirectly by giving the patients information about the child’s situation and also how they can support their child. This may show that the health care social worker can help the patient to handle the situation from another perspective and also through that help the child to do the same. In the interviews emerged that having a direct contact with children is not common and that challenges connected to that is something that may be a question of development in Primary health care.
