Abstract (Swedish)

(Less)
Abstract
The aim of this study was to deepen the understanding of existential themes that have surfaced during the covid-19 pandemic, how these themes have been experienced and dealt with, and whether they have given rise to any new perspectives or approaches regarding the ultimate concerns of life (Yalom, 1980). The ambition was to shed light on the existential aspects of being human during a pandemic, as well as what this can say about being human in general. Based on a heterogeneous sample, ten semi- structured interviews were conducted and thereafter analyzed with an Existentialist- Informed Hermeneutic Phenomenological framework. The results were presented in a narrative composed of poetically condensed quotes. Five central themes emerged in... (More)

Five central themes emerged in the analysis: (1) The pandemic filled the participants’ lives with uncertainty. (2) They experienced loss of routines, activities, relationships, meaning and identity, which led to existential anxiety. To a large extent this made them (3) adjust and (4) take responsibility for their new situation, in an attempt to reestablish what had been lost. These experiences of the pandemic gave rise to (5) new perspectives regarding the ultimate concerns of life. This study contributes to the current understanding of how people experience and deal with the ultimate concerns of life that are always present, but that tend to come to light during a crisis. The relational aspects of being human come forth, highlighting how we create meaning, come into existence and are helped to feel safe in relationship with others. (Less)
