Abstract
Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is the most common hormonal condition affecting around 1 in 10 women. Mostly quantitative research has been made on PCOS and patients’ experiences with health care encounters and qualitative studies are deemed vital to portray more nuanced overviews of experiences from patient perspectives. The purpose with this study is to investigate patients’ own experiences with Swedish conventional healthcare treatment regarding PCOS by using (bio)medicalization theory and gender bias as primary theoretical tools. The purpose with this study is to investigate patients’ own experiences with Swedish conventional healthcare treatment regarding PCOS by using (bio)medicalization theory and gender bias as primary theoretical tools. The study applies qualitative methods like couples’ interviews combined with journaling and image associations. These are guided by feminist standpoint theory which challenges the dominating gaze developing knowledge productions that, historically and today, shapes science, medicine, and health care. Participants’ stories testify de-medicalized psychosocial aspects and medicalized female reproduction which constitute important components to the overall perceived lack of a holistic perspective. They also reveal tendencies both for demanding more biomedicalization and rejecting it. More research is needed on PCOS and patient experiences, especially in Sweden, to address the profound gap between patients’ expectations as well as healthcare guidelines on one hand and the health care treatment given in practice on the other.
