Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate how care managers of elderly care reason about their work with partners to persons with dementia, to create a deeper understanding of dilemmas that occur in this line of social work. The method used was qualitative and the empirical material gathered through semi-structured interviews with five care managers. The inquiries focused on the view on partners’ significance for the work with persons with dementia and on challenges and possibilities to provide support to the partners. Attention was also paid to how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected their care managers’ ability to provide support to relatives. For the analysis, Organisational Theory was applied with an emphasis on the concepts of rationalized myths, decoupling and loosely coupled systems. Also the notion of discretion was used. The results show that partners hold great significance for the professional practice of care managers, as informal care givers. Furthermore, the results show that the decoupling between the needs of the formal and informal in a way limits the possibilities to meet the needs of partners. The results also show that a presumed consent, that is a consent that is not formally signed but understood as such, can increase the possibilities of meeting the needs of relatives. At the same time a presumed consent triggers a dilemma in terms of discretion since it challenges the guidelines of autonomy and empowerment, the formal client being the person with dementia. Furthermore, the possibilities of meeting the needs of partners was helped through rationalized myths in order tobe able to comply with the complexity of needs and claims of all involved. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the usual possibilities for giving support have been unavailable, and therefore not provided. This in turn has made the care giving more difficult, attention to partners harder and the responsibility of the partners as informal care givers has increased. The study concludes that attention to relatives' place in the work of care managers sheds light upon the complexity at stake in terms of requirements and support, resources, needs, and responsibilities.
