Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine how euthanasia is portrayed in Swedish debate articles. The study was based on a qualitative discourse analysis in which 35 debate articles from four different Swedish newspapers were included. The aim of the study was to examine what discourses could be identified in our selection of articles. The articles have been analyzed through theory: Social constructivism & discourse theory. The results from this study show that two different discourses can be found when examining these specific articles. One in which euthanasia is advocated and one in which it is opposed. The advocates argue that euthanasia ought to be a question about self-determination whereas the objectors argue that it cannot be allowed... (More)

The aim of the study was to examine what discourses could be identified in our selection of articles. The articles have been analyzed through theory: Social constructivism & discourse theory. The results from this study show that two different discourses can be found when examining these specific articles. One in which euthanasia is advocated and one in which it is opposed. The advocates argue that euthanasia ought to be a question about self-determination whereas the objectors argue that it cannot be allowed because it erodes human value. The objectors also worry about euthanasia being abused. The advocates primarily emphasized the right of self-determination and the objectors mainly brought up the argument about eroding human value. The advocates also brought up arguments about compassion, dignified death, and respect for the will of the individual. Unlike the advocates the objectors emphasized arguments such as: risk of a sloping plane, decreased trust in the healthcare system, and risk of a negative view on the elderly. To summarize; the phenomenon is portrayed in different manners in different articles, all depending on what discourse the writer asserts his or her writing. Different articles assert different discourses thus portraying the phenomenon in two distinctive ways. (Less)
