Abstract
This study aims to investigate how the given help and treatment from professionals and authorities affects parents of children with neuropsychiatric disabilities and their everyday life. The study is qualitative and it is based on six parents' stories and experiences, which they shared in individual interviews. All of the respondents were women, but with mixed ages. Three had one or two sons with neuropsychiatric disabilities, and three had more than one daughter with neuropsychiatric disabilities.

Our results have shown that all parents feel that their everyday life is affected, and that they all have been forced to educate themselves. All of the parents express that this goes beyond the ordinary parental responsibilities, and some of... (More)
This study aims to investigate how the given help and treatment from professionals and authorities affects parents of children with neuropsychiatric disabilities and their everyday life. The study is qualitative and it is based on six parents' stories and experiences, which they shared in individual interviews. All of the respondents were women, but with mixed ages. Our results have shown that all parents feel that their everyday life is affected, and that they all have been forced to educate themselves. All of the parents express that this goes beyond the ordinary parental responsibilities, and some of the respondents are unable to work due to lack of help or lack of understanding of their situation. We have also discovered some differences in the treatment of the parents depending on the sex of their children, which was a surprising result. The results of the study are furthermore discussed and analyzed from Foucaults and Putnams theories regarding knowledge and power and social capital. (Less)
