Abstract
Question: The purpose of this study was to investigate patient perspectives of helpful and hindering factors in PTSD-treatment.
Method: Seven qualitative studies focusing on patient perspective of PTSD-treatment were reviewed. Meta-ethnography and thematic analysis were used.
Results: The therapeutic relationship was seen as important and helpful. Patients viewed exposure and psychoeducation about PTSD as helpful in providing them with understanding of their symptoms and a context of themselves in relation to their trauma. Improvements in symptoms and a feeling of control during treatment was helpful and so was support from family and friends. An important hindering factor was that exposure to traumatic memories was stressful and so... (More)

Improvements in symptoms and a feeling of control during treatment was helpful and so was support from family and friends. An important hindering factor was that exposure to traumatic memories was stressful and so was an exacerbation in symptoms early in treatment. Lack of progress and not truly believing in the treatment or the rational was also hindering. In asylum-seeking people, a negative view of mental illness and worry about the future could impede treatment. For those who had dropped out of treatment problems with work, studies and family were often part of the explanation.
Conclusions: Attention should be paid to create a strong therapeutic alliance. It can benefit treatment if therapists help patients to feel in control of the therapeutic process. Therapists should be positive to involvement of family and friends if they are supportive. Further research of drop out from treatment is needed. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
