- Abstract
- The aim of this study was to investigate which factors relating to the 1) perpetrator of intimate partner violence and 2) the respondents have an impact on social workers’ judgements about the severity of intimate partner violence. The study was carried out by a factorial survey method - experimental vignettes - in which the respondents were asked to make judgements about vignettes – or fictitious cases – describing a report of concern to the social service involving intimate partner violence. The judgement involved the degree of severity of the situation, based on the information given by the perpetrator of the violence. The dimensions for the vignettes were chosen from previous studies about their impact on professional judgement or... (More)

The dimensions for the vignettes were chosen from previous studies about their impact on professional judgement or their overall meaning in the area of social work. In total, 49 social workers practicing in the area of child welfare made judgments about 481 vignettes. To analyze the judgements, multilevel linear regression analyses were carried out using the vignette variables and selected respondent variables as predictors. The results showed that significant coefficients were found for some of the variables, for example the violent act and the socioeconomic status of the perpetrator. Both of these variables affected the judgements made in a significant way. Another important result, even though the coefficients weren’t significant, was that the respondents’ judgements about severity varied across workplaces. The results were interpreted using theories about discretional reasoning. (Less)
