Abstract
The aim of this study has been to shed light on former criminals' experiences of their own reintegration into society, and to gain a better insight of how social services and probation services has played a part in that process. The aim of this study has been to shed light on former criminals' experiences of their own reintegration into society, and to gain a better insight of how social services and probation services has played a part in that process. The study is based on eight semi structured interviews with former criminals’ who are currently active in the organisation KRIS. In order to analyze our empirical material we have used previous research and Erving Goffman's theories about stigma and spoiled identity. Our results show that there are five different categories that affect their ability to readapt into society: addiction, stigma, social relations, work and support from authorities. This study has concluded that former criminals’ need to get rid of their addiction in order to get away from criminality, and it is therefore crucial for them to take part in different treatment programs for their addiction. Stigma has also shown to constitute an obstacle, where many experience prejudice and discrimination, which makes it harder for them to adapt to society. Support from family and friends and a positive social network has also played a significant part in their recovery process. A lack of social support can lead to either social isolation or former criminals’ falling back to criminal behaviour. Help from certain authorities and organisations such as social services, probation services and KRIS has also shown to be an important part in their reintegration, whereas KRIS has been the most prominent support system.
