The purpose of this study was to investigate how professionals view the Special Team in the city of Landskrona and their way of working with people with dementia. In the study, five interviews were conducted – one with the unit manager for the Special Team, one interview each with two of the assistant nurses for the Special Team, one interview with a social secretary from the city of Malmö and one interview with an inspector form the Swedish Health and Care Inspectorate. The used method was a qualitative method with semi-structured questions that would highlight the viewings of what professionals see as a success factor in introducing a
Special Team, what those who work in the Special Team see as unique with their team and how professionals view the issue of self-determination for people with dementia.

The results of the study showed that the interviewed professionals appreciate the Special Team’s way of working. It is through a person-centered approach that the Special Team is able to design individualized working methods for their care-recipients, which the interviewed professionals consider important. The results also show that the person-centered care protects the care-recipient’s right to self-determination, which the professionals also consider important. Furthermore, it emerged that the working procedures with care-recipients with dementia are controlled based on the organization’s formal structure. (Less)
