- Abstract (Swedish)
(Less) - Abstract
- Background: Cerebral Palsy [CP] is a brain injury which may lead to impaired hand function and is the most common diagnosis in children with motor disabilities. Occupational therapy interventions are needed to compensate or improve function in the upper extremity to promote occupational performance and participation in activities.
Aim: To review and investigate the orthotic interventions used for the upper extremity and the effects of these treatments on body function and occupational performance for children with CP between the age of 0-18 years.
Method: A literature review comprising 11 articles was conducted. A qualitative manifest content analysis with an inductive approach was used.

Results: The articles reported a divergent effect of the treatments. However, the results indicate that orthosis as a stand-alone treatment has an effect on both body function and occupational performance. The orthotic treatments used for children with CP vary. Functional soft orthoses are in majority, the rest offer a variation of Ultraflex or static orthosis.
Conclusions: Limited evidence supports use of orthosis as a stand-alone intervention to improve hand function, which can further promote occupational performance. Orthoses combined with other interventions may have a promoting effect on body function. The limited evidence requires further research to achieve certainty when choosing interventions for the upper extremity in children with CP. (Less)
