Abstract
As cities get denser due to urbanization, the importance of competitive public transport increases. Since a central factor when choosing transport mode is travelling time, high speeds and short delays are essential to attract more travellers to public transport. Many cities around the world, including Sweden, have implemented Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) or bus lines inspired by BRT, to make travelling by bus more attractive. As cities get denser due to urbanization, the importance of competitive public transport increases. Since a central factor when choosing transport mode is travelling time, high speeds and short delays are essential to attract more travellers to public transport. Many cities around the world, including Sweden, have implemented Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) or bus lines inspired by BRT, to make travelling by bus more attractive. The aim of this study is to improve the knowledge of how different measures affect travel time and by that, where the focus must be when establishing BRT in existing urban areas to reduce delays and to increase speeds. Based on reviewed literature, a case study was set up and carried out in Malmö, where the effects of implemented measures along the city´s BRT-inspired line where analysed. Moreover, a comparison between the measures’ affects along the BRT-inspired line, and comparable attributes’ affects along a traditional line, was made to analyse the dimension of potential time savings for a BRT-inspired line. The result shows that to implement BRT-inspired bus lines in an existing environment is complex, as prioritization of buses cannot be done without restrictions for other transport modes. The case study indicates that the BRT-inspired bus line in Malmö in general has higher delays compared to a traditional bus line in Malmö. Hence, there are measures that could be done to shorten these delays, and most importantly, there are measures that can be considered in the planning process for further implementation of BRT- inspired lines.
