Abstract (Swedish)

(More)

(Less)
Abstract
The aim of the report is to investigate the extent to which natural gravel can be replaced by crushed aggregates in road- and construction projects and for use as a substrate within concrete in the construction sector. By examining the gravel and crushed aggregates from a life cycle perspective as well as technical, economical and environmental perspective, this study aims to identify problem areas and the development potential of the use of crush aggregates. The contractors’ and clients’ interest in the long-term feasibility and utilisation of natural gravel will also be examined.

The contractors’ and clients’ interest in the long-term feasibility and utilisation of natural gravel will also be examined.

The literature review provided the basis for the interviews and to give a better overall view of the published literature within the field. Due to the current pandemic has the interviews been conducted digitally, using videocalling software. They can be identified as semi-structured interviews in order to generate qualitative data in order to fulfil the stated aim. The respondents were Skanska employees, who represented the entrepreneurial perspective, whilst the respondent from the city of Helsingborg represent the client perspective. If more interviews had been conducted with additional stakeholders, the validity of the work would have increased.

Sustainability is something that most contractors and clients strive for, but their capacity to transition to sustainable practices significantly differ. Much of the focus of environmental campaigning and action often centres on the issue of climate change, leaving the issue of natural gravel to be overshadowed. This study has demonstrated that the issue is too complex and several perspectives need to be taken into consideration. It has demonstrated that the question should not only be can natural gravel but also whether it should be. Natural gravel should be extracted if it is for specific purposes where there is no suitable substitute material. However, there should be no financial gain in extracting natural gravel. If the tax for natural gravel is raised, the industry will be driven towards developing new methods and using alternate materials, which creates better conditions for the future drinking water supply.
