Abstract
This study researches the social and legal norms surrounding police officers who have become victims for threat and violence crimes in the line of duty. It is based on three different data materials consisting of interviews with swedish police officers, documentanalyze of Swedish court documents and documents from The Swedish Crime Victim Compensation and Support Authority. By modifying Nils Christies theory about the ideal crime victim to fit the image when a police officer reaches status as a victim, the theory has been used as a template to analyze the material. The study aimed to answer the questions about which norms surround the police as crime victims, and what impact can these norms have? Findings show tendencies of the effect that... (More)

The study aimed to answer the questions about which norms surround the police as crime victims, and what impact can these norms have? Findings show tendencies of the effect that when the courts express the motivations that the officers should be more resilient for violence, and by not granting damages, the police officers feel less desire to report these crimes. Findings also show that when officers believe that they are met with a stronger access to violent measures by the perpetrator, they are more prone to report. This is also confirmed in the court documents where the claim of damages is more likely to be granted in these cases or in cases where the officers family is indirectly being threatened. Finally, confirming that the existing norms surrounding police officers can have an influence is based on the findings from the study. The impact is yet to be acknowledged and to do so further studies are required. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
