- Abstract
- The aim of this essay is to study the lack of regulation on privately run sheltered housing in Sweden from two different points of view. The first group is the general public opinion and the second group is employees and volunteers from women’s shelters. The relevance of this study is based on the assumptions from the effects of pandemic’s restrictions that violence against women is increasing and the requests of places on sheltered housing in Sweden. - The aim of this essay is to study the lack of regulation on privately run sheltered housing in Sweden from two different points of view. The first group is the general public opinion and the second group is employees and volunteers from women’s shelters. The relevance of this study is based on the assumptions from the effects of pandemic’s restrictions that violence against women is increasing and the requests of places on sheltered housing in Sweden. The essay intends to look into the opinions on privately run sheltered housing and how regulation is considered from two perspectives. A combination of Baier and Svensson’s theory according to social norms and Mary Douglas’s thoughts concerning how institutions think and act, laid the foundation of explaining different social norms due to the groups aspect, if the selection group is located inside or outside an institution. A survey was designed and sent out to both studied groups regarding their view on the lack of regulation on privately run sheltered housing. The study found that the respondents from the two studies had different opinions about the subject. One result showed that the general public had less knowledge about sheltered housing. Another result indicated that a majority of respondents from women’s shelters considered the lack of regulations as a great concern for the risk of the institution's own profit. In conclusion, this essay presents a current perception of the lack of regulation on privately driven shelters from two perspectives and can be useful in future research about regulation on sheltered housing and the continuing preventive work of improving support for abused women in Sweden.
