Abstract
This essay is questioning the place for dialects in audiobooks on the Swedish market. What are the publishing houses views of casting dialect voices and how are these voices perceived by the audiobook listeners? The theory is built around voice perception in audiobooks, representation and dialects in film, including works from Matthew Rubery, Iben Have & Birgitte Stougaard Pedersen and Jane Hodson. For the study, interviews have been made with audiobook producers at Swedish publishing houses as well as netnographic field studies examining comments made by listeners on Facebook and in the Storytel app. By analyzing the answers I came to the conclusion that dialects is appreciated by the listeners if they are genuine and well played out.... Limited research has been done on the subject and the hope is that this essay will bring some new perspectives in publishing and audiobook research and inspire further studies in the matter, as well as to help guiding the audiobook production in choosing voices in the future.
