Effects of Temporary Migration on Fertility: a Case Study of Post-Soviet Tajikistan and Russia
(2019) EKHS02 20191Department of Economic History
- Abstract
- This paper explores the relationship between temporary migration and fertility behaviour in Tajikistan. This research is motivated by the great volume of Tajikistanis who migrate temporarily from high-fertility Tajikistan to low-fertility Russia. Cox proportional hazards survival analysis models are used with a relatively large and representative dataset. The results of this analysis indicate that individual-level migration is associated with reduced higher-order fertility, while first-order fertility is unaffected. Community-level migration is not associated with either first- or higher-order fertility. Sensitivity analysis suggests that these findings are insensitive to minor methodological changes. Possible explanations for these... (More)

Possible explanations for these findings include ideational assimilation, economic adaptation, and disruption. Given the links between fertility and development, the findings of this study may be of interest to policymakers in Tajikistan. (Less)
