Abstract (Swedish)

(Less)
Abstract
It has been said that all architectural eras tend to reach their lowest point of popularity somewhere in their 30s. During an internship, I experienced
it first hand when I worked with an area in development in Stockholm. The strategy for the area was to demolish most of its buildings from the 1980s and 90s, buildings that are relatively young. I perceive the strategy as an expression for a general impopularity of the architecture from this period of time. Because of this, I believe there is a risk that architectural qualities and cultural-historical values from this period will be lost. In this thesis, I explore how an area from the 80s can be developed differently – in line with its character and the ideas from its time.

In this thesis, I explore how an area from the 80s can be developed differently – in line with its character and the ideas from its time.

Skarpnäck is a southern suburb in Stockholm that was built in the 1980s. The area is dominated by residential buildings and is characterised by
a great variety in terms of roof angles, balcony placements and window proportions. Skarpnäck is in the periphery – both in the city and as everyday architecture. Since the 1980s, no extensive change has happened in the character of the area. The municipality of Stockholm has defined a number of areas in Skarpnäck for future development and in some of these areas the work has already started.

In this thesis, there is a proposal for a new residential quarter in Skarpnäck. The main goal is that the proposal will contribute to strengthen and develop the character of the area and its architectural qualities. The second goal is to shed light on some of the architectural and cultural-historical values that the Swedish everyday architecture of the 80s possesses, where Skarpnäck is an example of this. As a starting point, I have studied architectural theories by Charles Jencks and Robert Venturi and interviewed one of the architects from Skarpnäck’s original design, Klas Tham. (Less)
