Abstract
This bachelor thesis discusses and describes the development of the pre-parliamentary election cycle debates in Sweden during the 2010s. The suspicion underlying this study is that a qualitative shift in the understanding of the terms and conditions underpinning “integration” took place during this period. The method applied to study this is a dual discourse analysis, one analysis regarding the substantial policy shift that might have taken place in the different parties' politics and one concerning the problem representation throughout the integration policy debate. The findings of the study are that the core conceptual understanding employed with the term “integration” does not shift over time, “integration” is understood as an economic... (More)
This bachelor thesis discusses and describes the development of the pre-parliamentary election cycle debates in Sweden during the 2010s. The findings of the study are that the core conceptual understanding employed with the term “integration” does not shift over time, “integration” is understood as an economic process in which migrants become economically self-reliant. That being said, other dimensions of the debate are struck by flux throughout the 2010s. The consensus position of the debate in 2010, that of optimism and confidence towards migration, has by 2018 been replaced by the presupposition that migration and integration poses challenges, obstacles and hardships that by some are seen as insurmountable. Furthermore, the politics of migration and integration have reshaped the political landscapes and coalitions of parliamentary politics. (Less)
