Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine how the Swedish news media portrays children, their next of kin and social services in articles related to child care. To conduct the study we examined five different newspapers from 2017 until 2018. From those five we selected 18 different articles. To select these articles we used keywords such as “child care”, “social services'', “report of concern” and “misconduct”. By using qualitative content analysis the empirics were divided into color coordinated categories. To guide this study theoretically we used the theory of framing and McCombs theory of agenda setting.

The results of our study showed that the media's portrayal of social services and social child care are overwhelmingly negative. The results showed that there is a difference in how the media chooses to portray social service compared to the children and the childrens next of kin. We found that the media changes the way it addresses the news depending on what part of the story was being told. . The news articles we have examined make it a point to shine a light on social services shortcomings and mistakes. However there are a few articles that speak positively about the work that social services does and the results that they achieve. The results also concluded that the media´s publicity brings little focus to biological parents, more often than not it is the child and the foster parents that are the center of attention. (Less)
