Abstract (Swedish)
On August of 2020 Dan Park and Rasmus Paludan announced a Quran burning in the
center of Malmö, Sweden. This qualitative thesis investigates the Swedish internet forum
Flashback’s users’ concept of freedom of expression, using the discussions around the

Using social constructivism and norms as well as netnography and critical discourse
analysis a few themes were identified. These were: the Quran burning as a
representation of the Swedish society’s instiutions, norms and values, freedom of
expression and speech, as well as threats, fear and violence against critics of Islam. The
users emphasized that both Muslims and Islam were something intrinsically opposed to
Swedish identity and seen as Others. The burning of the Quran was portrayed as an
inherent part of discourse of the freedom of expression, and thus a part of the Swedish
law, as well as an example of why critics of Islam would be considered deviating from
Swedish society. There was a clear conflict between the image of the right to expression
as without boundaries, and the actual right itself. Therefore, future research should
explore Swedish peoples’ legal consciousness and awareness of the laws cited.
