Abstract (Swedish)
By realizing that a mental illness does not only affect those who are sick, the foundation is laid for reduced suffering and shortened care time. If the relationship with family and network is further investigated, and that these are involved in the treatment, the family and couple interventions can lead to a more lasting treatment outcome. Counsellors with their holistic training, have the potential to see the patient in their family situation, which is why the study covers their way of working with the patient's couple and family relationships.
The purpose of this study was to analyse how counsellors in open forensic and general psychiatry work with the patient's close relationships with primarily partners and children.

The study was conducted using a qualitative method approach. Six semi-structured interviews with counsellors working in an adult outpatient clinic were conducted and the way counsellors worked was followed at treatment conferences for four months once a week. Empiri was analyzed according to Grounded theory.
The results showed that the counsellors mainly carry out individual work with the patients and their relatives also in the relationally oriented part of the work. The exception is those patients who have children, to whose families preventive interventions are directed, which, as a side effect, can lead to improved relationships within the family and more open communication between family members.
