Abstract
We live in a society where online shopping is becoming the most common form of shopping. Companies are investing and growing their online market by offering cheap and quick deliveries, online offers that beat in-store prices and increasing the number of package pick-up locations. We live a faster-paced lifestyle, which makes online shopping more convenient for us.
The rapid change in our shopping habits has had an impact on shopping malls. The malls are not as visited as they used to, hence why there is a growing trend of vacant spaces. Several malls in my hometown Malmö have gone through refurbishments and relaunches to bring back the visitors, but this has not worked in the long run.

It is clear that the future of shopping malls does not look very bright because the online market seems to be getting bigger and better with each passing year. One starts to wonder what will happen to the malls in the future and what their purpose will be. How can we put them to better use? I am curious to investigate possible options for re-adapting the shopping malls in Sweden. I am interested in exploring how these spaces can be used in the future and be better suited to society and the new lifestyle. The thesis aims to suggest and discuss new strategies for the redevelopment of shopping malls that can make them more dynamic and relevant for today’s society. Shopping malls used to be of high cultural value, but this is no longer the case. It is time to reinvent and find a new identity. (Less)
