- Musikens roll i samhället är ständigt ämne för diskussion. Den har sett olika ut genom tiderna och under perioder har musiklivet blivit hårt reglerat från politiskt håll. Detta arbete undersöker förhållandet mellan musik och politik med frågeställningar om hur musikskapandet påverkas av politisk inblandning, och om vad konstnärens uppgift är i samhället. Dessa frågor undersöks med utgångspunkt i Paul Hindemiths opera och symfoni Mathis der Maler. Arbetet behandlar det tyska musiklivet efter nazistpartiets maktövertagande 1933 med inblickar i Hindemiths situation som tonsättare. - The role of music in society is a topic frequently discussed. It has varied a lot between different times, and in shorter periods of time, the musical life has been put under political control. This work investigates the relation between music and politics, focusing on how the creation of music is affected by political interference and what the artist’s duty in society is. These questions are researched with the starting point in Paul Hindemith’s Mathis der Maler opera and symphony. The work treats musical life in Germany after the transfer of power to the National Socialist party in 1933, with insights into Hindemith’s situation as a composer. The music unwanted by the regime was slandered and censored, and the arts came to be more... (More)

The question about the artist’s duty in society became important and in the case of Hindemith, the answer is that the artist has a responsibility to keep creating no matter the circumstances. (Less)
