Abstract
The research on psychedelics and their effects on well-being and as a treatment for mental illness is growing fast. The research has been mostly quantitative, but qualitative efforts are catching up. One qualitative meta-analysis synthesized four themes and their associated subthemes: (1) phenomenology of the experience; (2) perspectives on the intervention; (3) therapeutic processes and (4) outcomes of the intervention. This study aims to investigate if themes 3 and 4 were applicable on a type of data where today's research is scant: online trip-reports. We also investigated how these four themes might connect to future well-being. We designed a survey based on the WHO-5 well-being index to measure the participants perception of how their... (More)

We also investigated how these four themes might connect to future well-being. We designed a survey based on the WHO-5 well-being index to measure the participants perception of how their well-being was changed by their psychedelic trip. The survey was posted on online-forums discussing drugs. We collected four complete survey answers and another seven trip-reports from internet-forums discussing drugs, leaving us with a total of eleven trip-reports to analyze. The analysis was a deductive thematic analysis. The results showed that all the subthemes of themes 3 and 4 were represented in the trip-reports, and that three out of the four participants who completed the survey felt a clear increase in well-being as an effect of the psychedelic experience. These results indicate that the therapeutic processes and outcomes associated with psychedelics used in a clinical setting are shared with usage in a non-clinical setting. These findings might have societal implications in dealing with psychedelic self-medication. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(More)
(Less)
