Abstract
More than half of the world’s population use social media today in different contexts and the usage increases every year. Perceived self-esteem and friendships influence how we as humans relate to each other and are affected by the growth of social medias. It’s important that research continues to examine how social media influences people both in a general and specific aspect. More than half of the world’s population use social media today in different contexts and the usage increases every year. Perceived self-esteem and friendships influence how we as humans relate to each other and are affected by the growth of social medias. It’s important that research continues to examine how social media influences people both in a general and specific aspect. This study aimed to examine the relationship between social media usage and perceived self-esteem in high school students. The study also aimed to examine if friendships worked as a mediator between social media usage and perceived self-esteem in high school students. Finally, it aimed to examine if there were any gender differences for perceived self-esteem, friendship quality and number of friends in high school students. 139 high school students participated in this study. The participants filled in an internet survey with questions about number of friends, a self-designed questionnaire about friendship quality and Rosenberg self-esteem scale. The study found no significant relationship between social media usage and perceived self-esteem in high school students. Friendship quality did not work as a mediator between social media usage and perceived self-esteem in high school students. The study found a significant gender difference for perceived self- esteem, but not for friendship quality nor number of friends in high school students. Future research needs to look into how social media affects people in a broader perspective and the relationship between social media and different aspects such as friendships and perceived self-esteem. Sociala medier används idag av mer än hälften av jordens befolkning inom olika kontexter och användningen fortsätter att öka. Upplevd självkänsla och vänskapsrelationer påverkar hur vi människor förhåller oss till varandra och hur vi upplever oss själva, och påverkas av sociala mediernas utbredning. Med anledning av detta är det viktigt att den forskning som görs fortsätter att undersöka sociala mediers inverkan på oss människor både generellt och mer specifikt. Sociala medier används idag av mer än hälften av jordens befolkning inom olika kontexter och användningen fortsätter att öka. Upplevd självkänsla och vänskapsrelationer påverkar hur vi människor förhåller oss till varandra och hur vi upplever oss själva, och påverkas av sociala mediernas utbredning. Med anledning av detta är det viktigt att den forskning som görs fortsätter att undersöka sociala mediers inverkan på oss människor både generellt och mer specifikt. Denna studie syftade till att undersöka sambandet mellan användningen av sociala medier och upplevd självkänsla hos gymnasieungdomar. Studien syftade även till att undersöka om vänskapsrelationer fungerade som en mediator mellan användningen av sociala medier och upplevd självkänsla hos gymnasieungdomar. Slutligen hade studien som syfte att undersöka om det fanns några könsskillnader avseende upplevd självkänsla, vänskapskvalitet och antal vänner hos gymnasieungdomar. 139 gymnasieungdomar deltog i studien där de fick besvara en webbenkät som bestod av frågor kring antal vänner, en egenkonstruerad vänskapskvalitetsskala och Rosenberg self-esteem scale. Inget signifikant samband hittades mellan användning av sociala medier och upplevd självkänsla hos gymnasieungdomar. Kvaliteten på vänskapsrelationer fungerade inte som en mediator mellan användning av sociala medier och upplevd självkänsla hos gymnasieungdomar. Det fanns en könsskillnad avseende upplevd självkänsla, men inte vänskapskvalitet eller antal vänner hos gymnasieungdomar. Framtida forskning behöver både undersöka mer generellt kring sociala mediers påverkan på människan och sambandet mellan sociala medier och olika aspekter som vänskapsrelationer och upplevd självkänsla.
