Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the strategies foreign-born women choose to use in order to succeed in establishing themselves in the labor market in their new home country and to illustrate the reasoning of foreign-born women about negative and positive experiences in their situation. In order to achieve the best and most relevant result in my research a qualitative method was used, in the form of a semi-structured interview. The aim of this study was to investigate the strategies foreign-born women choose to use in order to succeed in establishing themselves in the labor market in their new home country and to illustrate the reasoning of foreign-born women about negative and positive experiences in their situation. Foreign-born women are often faced with unemployment to a greater extent than foreign-born men and native Swedish women in Sweden, due to lack of language skills, work experience and education. In order to achieve the best and most relevant result in my research a qualitative method was used, in the form of a semi-structured interview. The people I have interviewed were nine foreign-born women. In order to gain a deeper understanding of the interview answers, I have used three different theories (social capital, human capital and empowerment). The study has shown that in order to establish a successful job career in the labor market, the most used strategies for approaching the labor market have been education, language learning, social contacts and development of skills. Furthermore, the results of the study shows that human capital and social capital have an impact on the individual's entry into the labor market, but according to the interviewees, human capital has been most useful alongside the hard work, ambition and experience of foreign-born women. These were counted as their strengths that have brought these women into the labor market, which I have connected to the concept of empowerment in women, in this study. (Less)
