- Abstract
- Although human rights related controversies in Formula 1 have arisen in the past, conversations about sportswashing have been particularly prevalent during the 2021 season. The idea behind the practice of sportswashing is for an authoritarian state to use sporting events to form a distraction from human rights abuses and improve the practicing nation’s image. Many countries accused of using Formula 1 for sportswashing purposes, such as Saudi Arabia, have made plans to diversify their economies partly by developing their tourism sectors through the use of big sporting events to attract international tourists. However, previous research on mega-events has shown little empirical support for any positive effects on tourism and economy in host countries, which raises questions whether Formula 1 is an effective tourism-boosting tool for countries accused of sportswashing. To provide an answer, this paper investigates the effect of hosting a Formula 1 Grand Prix on a host nation’s tourism arrivals by using a regression analysis of an aggregated version of a gravity model based on previous research. Results indicate that hosting a Formula 1 Grand Prix has no significant effect on tourism in the host country. It can therefore be concluded that Formula 1 is not an effective way to sportswash if the motivation behind the sportswashing is to increase host country tourism. (Less)
