Abstract (Swedish)
Uppsatsens empiri... (More)

(Less)
Abstract
Elite athletes are constantly exposed to physiological and psychological
demands. An excessively demanding mental and physiological effort could
increase the risk of injury among young elite athletes and can be manifested through physical injuries as well as mental problems. The purpose of this qualitative approach was to examine young handball players’ experiences of sport psychology training and by extension, wether the training was perceived as feasible, appropriate and meaningful. The thesis also aimed to examine what the players’ perceived as important for the motivation to practice sports psychology training in the future. The thesis also aimed to examine what the players’ perceived as important for the motivation to practice sports psychology training in the future. The participants were five handball players (16-18 years) who performed sport psychology exercises for 6-7 weeks. The empiri was collected trough a semi-structured focus group interview and processed based on a thematic analysis. The exercises were considered as feasible, appropriate and meaningful. The participants experienced a better focus and increased awareness. The result of the study indicated that self-determination and competence were experienced important for further motivation. Furthermore, students’ own motivation was expressed to be important for carrying out sport psychology training in the future. To be able to maintain the players’ motivation, new exercises, as well as other types of exercises needed to be developed. Finally, the study concluded that the sport
psychology training needed to be further examined and that future research
needed to supplement qualitative studies with quantitative studies in order to ascertain actual effects. Another proposal was to carry out studies in differents sports. (Less)
