- Abstract
- The aim of this study was to explain how hospital social workers are working with children of seriously ill parents. The study was based on semi-structured interviews with seven hospital social workers working in both somatic and psychiatric wards and clinics in Region Skåne, Sweden. When analyzing the data Aron Antonovsky's theory, KASAM - sense of coherence and Urie Bronfenbrenner's theory, the ecology of human development was used. The result of this study found that the hospital social workers cooperate with other healthcare professionals to get in contact with the children of seriously ill parents through routines like documentation and anamnesis. - The aim of this study was to explain how hospital social workers are working with children of seriously ill parents. The study was based on semi-structured interviews with seven hospital social workers working in both somatic and psychiatric wards and clinics in Region Skåne, Sweden. The study declared several working methods that hospital social workers use to provide information and support for the children to a seriously ill parent. Different working methods like guidelines, conversation tools and a regional plan of action are used in their work with children and parents. Furthermore, the study showed that hospital social workers experienced various difficulties in their work with children of a seriously ill parent including dilemmas, emotional and practical difficulties. Many of the interview participants describe difficulties such as alliance breaking, main focus on patients, short hospital stays, collegial differences and the impact of the pandemic. (Less)
