Abstract
The aim of this thesis was to explore the experience of and reasoning about social pressure to which senior citizens have been subjected to during the covid-19 pandemic. Our research consisted of eight semistructured interviews with pensioners over the age of 65, which reflect our qualitative approach. The theoretical framework of the analysis was Scott & Lyman's (1968) theory of accounts, combined with an evolved concept of storytelling by Harvey, Weber and Orbuch (1990). Excuses, justification and storytelling have been our main themes. The aim of this thesis was to explore the experience of and reasoning about social pressure to which senior citizens have been subjected to during the covid-19 pandemic. The theoretical framework of the analysis was Scott & Lyman's (1968) theory of accounts, combined with an evolved concept of storytelling by Harvey, Weber and Orbuch (1990). Excuses, justification and storytelling have been our main themes. This study indicates, that when elderly people were requested to isolate themselves more so than the average person, they became indecisive whilst considering their own best interests and those of their loved ones. Moreover, this study shows that pensioners justify and excuse different actions depending on aspects such as family, friends and trust towards the Swedish Public Health Agency. Our interviews showed that the majority of participants have continued to live as normal during the pandemic and have not been faced with tangible social pressure. Whereas the minority, due to family members having certain professions within health care, have been faced with difficulties. Furthermore, this thesis also demonstrates that elements such as old age, physical abilities and the source of criticism have been vital to whether or not the said person has experienced social pressure.
