Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine how therapists use and perceive attachment theory in couples therapy. A qualitative method has been used since I wanted to get access to the therapists thoughts and experiences on a deeper level. Semistructured interviews were conducted with four therapists’, working with couples therapy, which were chosen with a purposeful sampling. The interviews were recorded, transcribed and then analyzed based on previous research and theories. The results of this study show that all therapists used attachment theory in their therapy with couples, more or less. However, the theory was important and was a complementary tool in the work of three of four therapists. The therapists used the attachment theory to... (More)
The aim of this study was to examine how therapists use and perceive attachment theory in couples therapy. The therapists used the attachment theory to describe to couples how relationships can be affected by attachment and how conflict can arise as a result of that. They also used the theory to identify behaviors of the couples, which strategies they use against each other which lead to conflicts. Furthermore, three of four therapists use attachment theory as an understanding of how to resolve conflicts and how to modify attachment patterns. Therapists also used themselves as a tool to create a trusting relationship with the couples, which is especially important when it comes to clients with insecure attachment. Besides attachment theory, the concepts of alliance and validation also proved to be central theoretical tools for the therapists in working with their clients. Besides all positive aspects of the theory, attachment theory could not guide all problems in couples therapy. (Less)
