Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine experiences among compulsory school counselors in Sweden working with truants ,“hemmasittare” in Swedish. The method chosen for this study was qualitative interviews, seven different school counselors were interviewed. The gathered empirical material was analyzed using neo-institutional theory, with the three main questions of this study as background. Results found that the experiences differed. With no sort of guideline the counselors were often left on their own relying on past experiences and knowledge trying to provide help, while also being restricted by time and funding. The school counselors in this study find early interventions with the group as fundamental to prevent periods of absence... (More)

With no sort of guideline the counselors were often left on their own relying on past experiences and knowledge trying to provide help, while also being restricted by time and funding. The school counselors in this study find early interventions with the group as fundamental to prevent periods of absence from becoming longer breaks. Furthermore, the school counselors point out that collaboration is a necessity to be able to design adequate efforts, but at the same time something that can hinder the work process itself in cases regarding pupils with truancy. Most counselors felt that a simple increase in resources would naturally lead to better outcomes. While others expressed that some sort of knowledge gap hindered in providing adequate help. These school counselors felt that more research was needed, not only about truancy within a Swedish context but also within the field of truancy itself. This falls in line with what this study has attempted to highlight; truancy within a Swedish context, problems and difficulties that compulsory school counselors in Sweden might face while working with
truants. (Less)
