Abstract
The aim of the study was to compare the experience of change among patients
with panic disorder with or without agoraphobia (PD/A) in Panic Control
Treatment (PCT) and Panic Focused Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (PFPP).
Results from RCTs support both treatments as effective for patients with PD/A.
This study examines qualitative differences in the experiences of change in PCT and PFPP from a patient perspective. The sample of 32 patients was a
randomized subsample from the project POSE, Psychotherapy outcome and
self-selection effects for panic disorder where one half of the sample was treated with PCT and the other with PFPP. Interviews from 6 month-follow up was included. Methodologically the study was inspired by grounded theory

self-selection effects for panic disorder where one half of the sample was treated with PCT and the other with PFPP. Interviews from 6 month-follow up was included. Methodologically the study was inspired by grounded theory
combined with a pragmatic approach. PCT-patients tended to understand their
difficulties related to PD/A in a new way while PFPP-patients experienced
reaching a more extensive and profound understanding of the self and the outer world. PCT-patients seem to experience themselves less limited by problems related to PD/A whereas PFPP-patients described that they experienced themselves stronger and more open to their outside world. In addition to these differentiating aspects there were more general, overlapping experiences which could be seen as a result from common factors. The study's results support that there are differences between experiences of change between the treatments. The experiences of change seem to be more limited and closely linked to PD/A among PCT-patients which indicate a more focused treatment effect, compared to PFPP-patients who described more pervasive experiences. Abstract (Swedish)
