Phylogeny, ecology and morphology of the two corticolous lichen species Rinodina colobina and R. pityrea in Sweden
(2021) BIOM02 20212Degree Projects in Biology
- Abstract
- Morphologically, the two corticoous species Rinodina pityrea and R. colobina are characterized by their dark blue-green blastidiate thallus and black plain or convex apothecia, with a light grey thallus margin. Rinodina pityrea and R. colobina are currently on the Swedish Red List as vulnerable (VU) and endangered (EN), respectively. They are hard to distinguish from Caloplaca chlorina in sterile form and can only be distinguished from each other by the presence of a perispore (a second cell wall around the edge of the spore appearing like a halo). The aim of the study was to elucidate the phylogeny of R. pityrea and R. colobina using molecular data, evaluate their ecology in Sweden and wether there are any other morphological... (More)

It was found that R. pityrea and R. colobina are closely related but two genetically distinct species and several morphological characteristics were found to help in distinguishing them from each other as well as from C. chlorina when sterile. The two species should keep their status on the redlist since their substrates appear to be disappearing. (Less)

(Less)
