Kvarteret Krubban

Abstract

The unusual block called Krubban is situated in the district Östermalm in Stockholm. Krubban is very interesting and different compared to the closed residential blocks surrounding it. For example there are a lot of historical buildings from different centuries and as a green area it is a lot more lush and wild than the urban environment of Östermalm. Despite this Krubban is not as appealing and inviting to visitors as it has potential to be. For example the old officers' stables stand unused and could, with its location and beautiful facade, potentially be transformed into a new function and contribute to a more vivid neighborhood.

The aim with this project was to investigate how a transformation of the old Officers' stables and its surroundings could contribute to making the block more inviting to the city. And study how a new historical layer should be applied to such a historically valuable environment as the Krubban block.

Through studying and analyzing the block's history, values and problems an understanding of the block was created. Which was an important foundation for further sketching and working with the transformation.

The result of the project is a design proposal for transforming the old Officer’s stables and its surroundings and also a freestanding extension next to the existing building. Working in this historically and culturally valuable environment is difficult but in this proposal I think that I show how a carefully added new architectural and historical layer could give new life to this old block.

Det ovanliga kvarteret Krubban är beläget på Östermalm i Stockholm. Kvarteret är jämfört med omkringliggande bostadskvarter annorlunda då det består av många spännande gamla byggnader från olika århundraden. Kvarteret är också ovanligt grönskande och kuperat. Trots detta är kvarteret relativt slutet och lever idag inte upp till sin potential att vara ett spännande och levande kvarter som lockar besökare från hela staden. Det gamla Officerstallet står exempelvis tomt och har, med sin fina fasad och sitt läge, potential att byggas om till en ny funktion som skulle kunna bidra till ett mer levande kvarter.

Syftet med detta arbetet var att utgå ifrån Officerstallet och dess närområde för att undersöka om ett nytt arkitektoniskt lager kan hjälpa till att öppna upp kvarteret och hur man bör gå tillväga när man förändrar något i en så pass historiskt värdefull miljö som i kvarteret Krubban.

Genom att studera och analysera kvarterets historia, kvalitéer och problem skapades en bred förståelse för kvarteret. Denna förståelse stod till grund vid skissarbetet av hur ett nytt arkitektoniskt lager skulle kunna bidra till ett mer inbjudande och livfullt kvarter.

Arbetet har resulterat i ett gestaltningsförslag för ombyggnad av det gamla Officerstallet och dess närområde samt en fristående tillbyggnad intill. Att arbeta i en sådan kulturhistoriskt värdefull miljö som detta kvarter är svårt då det finns mycket historiska värden att ta hänsyn till och bevara. Men i mitt förslag tycker jag att jag på ett försiktigt och hänsynsfullt sätt har visat hur ett nytt arkitektoniskt lager skulle kunna ge nytt liv till detta historiska kvarter.
