Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
There is a need for validated instruments measuring emotion regulation
strategies that are developed particularly for adolescents. The aim of the study was to explore the psychometric properties of the further developed scale entitled, Adolescents’ Emotion Regulation Strategies Questionnaire, version 2(AERSQ:2), developed at Lund university. Through convenience sampling, 239 adolescents (Mage = 14,13, SDage = 0,88, range: 12-16 years) took part in the study. We performed exploratory factor analysis to uncover the underlying structure of the AERSQ:2. Seven factors were identified: listening to music, seeking friends’ support, rumination, openness, moving on, writing and acting out, where the first five of them showed good (α > 0,7)... (More)

We performed exploratory factor analysis to uncover the underlying structure of the AERSQ:2. Seven factors were identified: listening to music, seeking friends’ support, rumination, openness, moving on, writing and acting out, where the first five of them showed good (α > 0,7) internal consistency. In general, girls used the identified strategies to a larger extent than boys. Few differences, although weak, with regard to grade were found. Correlational statistics showed that rumination had strong positive correlation (r = 0,61, p < 0,001) with mental health problems such as anxiety and depression, and strong negative correlation (r = -0,43, p < 0,001) with life satisfaction, which was consistent with previous research. The factors listening to music, which was the most salient in the exploratory factor analysis, writing and acting out showed
similar correlational results as rumination. It was discussed whether listening to music or writing could amplify or prolong a negative mental health state.
AERSQ:2 seems to be a promising instrument for measuring emotion regulation
strategies for adolescents, however more research is needed in terms of the
included items and psychometric testing. (Less)
