Computer games are taking up much time and space in many youth´s young people’s everyday daily life. A lack of knowledge about consequences from such activities, can cause concern and worry within families. The purpose of this study was to investigate how family therapist reason about the effects of video computer games on the social relations within families and hence on their work with the families. The method used was qualitative and semi structured interviews were conducted with six family therapists. The analysis was built by interweaving the empirical material with System Theory and the concept of “Moral Panic” to analyse what role computer games takes in the family. A main result showed that they frequently tended to be seen as problematic by parents but were by the therapists instead considered as a symptom of other problems in the family. Their work then consisted in shifting the attention from conflict to interest, and thus improved communication using the computer games as a tool. The study concludes that what the family therapists describe can be seen as the holistic approach that is the basis of systems theory, where the parents instead risk focusing on parts of the system and get caught up in conflicts.
